is the administrative of the State. According to 1991
census, the urban population of the State is 37006 and
Gangtok alone has population of 25024 i.e. 68%. The
rapid and high degree of population shift from rural to
urban areas has forced the capital town to grow in very
rapid manner. Gangtok town has now been proposed to be
built into a model city.
The Government has stopped the allotment of sites in the
town. The existing infrastructure and civic amenities
like parking areas, marketing yard, alternative
footpaths, recreational parks etc. are being developed
to cope with the rapid urbanisation. This becomes even
more important as Gangtok, the capital of the state, is
also the centre of administrative, cultural, social and
educational activities in the State.
